Mayhem as monks go on the rampage

Pandemonium reigned at the Homagama Magistrate's Court premises with three Buddhist monks threatening to self-immolate in protest against the arrest of Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.

Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera arrested on the charges of contempt of court, obstructing Court proceedings and intimidating a public servant was yesterday ordered to be remanded till February 9 after being produced before the Homagama Magistrate's Court.

A large group of Buddhists monks surrounded the Homagama Magistrate's Court, protesting against the decision to remand Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.

Ven Gnanasara Thera was taken to the prisons at around 5. 30 p.m. from Homagama court premises under the tight security of Special Task Force.

A tense situation erupted when Ven. Gnanasara Thera was about to be taken to the prisons. Members of the Maha Sangha numbering around 200 protested shouting slogans, when the prisons officials were taking the Thera out of the court premises.

They accused the politicians and pelted stones at the court officials too. Bottles and stones were also hurled by some protesting monks at Special Task Force personnel who were called in to defuse the situation.

Some Budshist monks were seen sleeping on the road blocking the movement of prisons bus which was to transport Ven. Gnanasara Thera to the prisons from the Magistrate's Court premises.

However, the STF personnel managed to bring a cab to the court premises at around 5.30 p.m. amidst various obstacles and Ven. Gnanasara Thera was taken to the prisons under tight security provided by the STF and Prisons guards. Some of the Buddhist Monks tried to enter the court premises, but were prevented by Police. The Police later closed the gates to prevent the monks from entering the court premises.

However, several monks jumped over the wall and entered the court premises while other monks blocked the road preventing Ven. Gnanasara Thera from being taken to prison.

Around 300 police officers and the riot police with water cannon vehicles arrived at the Court premises to control the situation.

Meanwhile, while ordering Ven. Gnanasara Thera to be kept in remand custody, Homagama Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake observed that public nuisance would be created, if the suspect was released on bail since he had made a challenge to the Court's jurisdiction.

Ven. Gnanasara Thera on Monday began to address Open Court after the court hearing pertaining to the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda was over.

Addressing the Court, Ven. Gnanasara Thera praised the Army officers' role in eradicating terrorism in the country and reprimanded the government and the Attorney General Department's Senior State Counsel for giving instruction to arrest Army officers in connection with Ekneligoda's disappearance. While rejecting the suspect to be release on bail, the Magistrate observed that the suspect could be charged in the High Court and in the Court of Appeal as well on contempt of court charges. He directed police to conduct further investigations into the incident and seek the Attorney General's advice regarding the matter.

Magistrate Dissanayake said the LTTE which is considered as world's brutal terrorist organisation, did not even challenge the country's judicial system.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate directed the Attorney General that a Senior State Counsel be appointed to look into this matter in accordance with section 136 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Defence counsel Thushara Dissanayake appearing on behalf of the suspect told Court that his client did not have an intention to insult the Court and he was compelled to behave in such a manner after seen the tragedy of Army officers in connection with the murder of Ekneligoda. Homagama police had arrested the suspect and produced in Court.

Even at the time of this edition going to press yesterday afternoon, the ruckus at the Homagama court premises was continuing.

This bugger Ranga Disnayale is such an idiot when he claims that the LTTE did not challenge the judiciary....no they did not but they treated the judiciary with contempt with wanton killings while the likes of this guy was did all talk.

These people calling them selves Buddhist monks all, ruining the name of Buddha, disgraceful, all should have been taken to court.

So if you a Buddhist monk take what ever they dish out, rollover and be shafted..

Yes this is what he wanted to land in the jail With so much of disgrace to people and the Buddhism

The police should have thrashed these rogues who are masquerading as monks wearing saffron robes; sadly, Buddhism is in trouble in our motherland.

This is disgraceful. Nobody should be above the law. Hat off to the Homagama Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake for remanding Nanasara as this creates a dangerous precedent if not handled properly.

Thopila , Insulted Buddhism and use illegal sharia and Halaal. Law will arrest you !!

Yes this is disgraceful. Not only Gnanasara, these unbecoming behaviour of others who support should be stopped by the government. There are others in robes, leading luxurious lives, drawing salaries, all these practices not suitable for a Buddha Putra should be banned. If they want to live such lives they should leave the robe and do so.

I do not accept neither these monks who seek solutions to problems through violence nor do I accept many Sri Lankans' behaviors according to Buddhist teaching. It is sad to see how front line Sinhalese (Bhikkhu and lay people) deteriorate their Buddhist identities. Many who comments here do not show their understanding about the Buddhist teaching either. Buddhism is never destroyed although people monks and lay people misbehave. There are many Buddhists (monks and lay people) who practice the Dhamma well enough to preserve it. Buddhist teaching is not a heritage of monks. Lay men and women are two main sections of the fourfold disciples. So without paying attention to any monks who are not in accordance with the vinaya, it is your duty to take the responsibility to practice Buddhism and preserve it. These monks were not born as monks. They came from Lay community. It is your duty to enter in to Sangha and make it pure. At least make your life righteous and then monks will look at you and correct themselves. Observe the words of the Buddha. it is a teaching that exists in mind, not in a temple, or in a robe or in anyone else behavior. So without polluting your mind by using unpleasant words, you must be able to be example. When Devadatta, Sunakkatta and many mischievous monks in Buddha's time did bad things, the Buddha never become unkind to those monks. Please commentators, follow the Buddha's path. If anyone does not live upto the Dhamma, they will receive bad results from them. With Metta thoughs Bhante J Ottawa, Canada

Great Job done by this Magistrate, no one should be allowed to take the Law into their hands, shame we go to these rogues for AWAVADA and anushashanas

The monks in behaving like thugs, should deal with Vinaya Pitaka guidances by Sanga Nayaka/s of the chapter.

What a disgraceful government you have. Intimidate even the courts. A wh..e who kidnapped a man go free. But a bhikku who slammed a terrorists wife go to jail. You guys end up in a worse situation than the idiots in Iraq

At last, some one had the courage to stop this terrorist from taking the law into his hands

Gnanasara and his group are not true monks. I saw Gembanpila was also behind Ghanasara. I suspect this is behind Gotabaya too.

NO CITIZEN SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW.WELL DONE MAGISTRATE

Magistrate is a LTTE sympathiser who claim LTTE respected the law of the land. Is this magistrate is on drugs?

Most of the so called Monks in Saffron Cloth are not Ordained Monks, ordinary people were given Saffron Robes by MR &Co to create a massive gathering to show Monks are protesting. This is a creation by MR & GR just like creating BBS.

"Sabbha papassa akera-num kusalassa upa-sampada saccita pariyo dapanum Etam Buddhanu sassanum"!

There needs to be a clear message that Buddhism and Buddhist tradition does not condone behavior like this from anyone.

If the government takes proper legal action against these monks they will not behave this way. The govt. is afraid of losing Sinhala Budhist votes and allow these saffron clad criminals to enjoy impunity from the law. If this continues all Budhist monks will continue this as a practice whenever they are brought before the courts. Some monks even demand total impunity to whatever they do.

This is what this unholy priest wanted. To become a saint amongst devils. I have always wanted to know where his temple housinghkm is situated. Hope some one co uld help.

We respect and admire the courage and the duty the Homagama Magistrate has shown by sending this thug to remand prison. We humbly request him not to release him on my bail but remand him for further 6 months without recourse for any hospitalised medical treatment. Please take steps to send all bastards who where saffron robes pretending to be priests. Hope the other prisoners have the courage to shut me up.

gnanasara THUG thera has to be disrobed along with the other thug monks who threw rocks and stones and caused damage these monkeys are a disgrace to real bhuddism

How can these people be called Ven.... Thero? Buddha putras cannot behave in this manner. Even a lay person is not supposed to behave in this manner. It is a shame! Certain Buddhist monks delivering sermons on TV also spoke against the government for bringing in Bauddha Katikawatha. They do not like it because they want to live luxurious lives like kings. This dirty behaviour of people attired in robes disgraces the Buddhist community! This should be immediately stopped by the government.

The government should have nothing to do with the Buddhist clergy and vice versa, the clergy should have nothing to do with the government. The Buddhist clergy heirarchy should have teeth to disrobe any monk who misbehave and bring Buddhism into ldisrepute.

..."three Buddhist monks threatening to self-immolate in protest" How is that an effective form of protest? 1. You can only protest in this manner once. 2. You will be dead afterwards so will have no way of ever knowing if anything changed or they just shook their heads, called you an idiot, and had someone sweep your ashes off the sidewalk.
