Swire praises Govt’s reconciliation, development programmes

British Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Hugo Swire on his third official visit to Sri Lanka praised the progress made by the government of Sri Lanka in terms of reconciliation and economic development.

While the minister hopes to visit those who have been resettled after the war in Jaffna today, he stated that it is due to the progress Britain has witnessed that a sum of E6.6 million pounds was allocated by the UK Government to fund and support to support peace and reconciliation In Sri Lanka over three consecutive years.

“One vital aspect of reconciliation and economic development — and a growing area of cooperation between the UK and Sri Lanka - is tackling corruption. This was, of course, a key election promise of President Maithripala Sirisena. And answering his request for international assistance, the UK is providing anti-corruption training and anti-bribery expertise to the Sri Lankan authorities,” Swire stated addressing the audience. He said that this is important as he believed reconciliation will be the be the foundation on which the country’s future success will be built on, he considered the most significant of the developments was the government’s commitment to the Human Rights council which were made in September.

“Those commitments to take meaningful steps towards truth and accountability after the long conflict here are key to bringing about lasting reconciliation,” Swire said. State Enterprise Development Deputy Minister Eran Wickramaratne said the country is looking forward to assistance in the Science and Technology fields, which is the forte of the European world. During his three-day visit, Swire will meet President Maithripela Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and a number of other ministers.
