The historic Sigiriya is a national heritage. We should protect it for the future generations and it is our prime duty and responsibility, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said. The minister expressed these sentiments when he visited Sigiriya and inspected the recent damages said to have occurred there.

"During the past regime, the management had ignored the instructions given by the archaeological experts, which resulted in several damages to the historic Sigiriya," Kariyawasam said.

"The tourism industry will also be further improved by taking more steps to protect the historic Sigiriya rock fortress.

"During the past a large sum of money was wasted by the previous management. I instruct the relevant officials to take action to conserve Sigiriya," the minister said.

The officials of the Central Cultural Fund also accompanied the minister.
