Malinga's fitness test postponed again for Dec 28

Lasith Malinga

Sri Lanka's one-day fast bowler and T20 captain Lasith Malinga has had his fitness test on his injured left knee postponed for December 28 thus reducing his chances of making an early appearance in the ongoing five-match one-day international series against New Zealand.

Malinga was expected to undergo the fitness test on Boxing Day, but chief selector Kapila Wijegunawardene stated that it has been postponed for December 28 on the advice of team physio Steve Mount and the three doctors attending to him - consultant physician Dr Arjuna de Silva, consultant rheumatologist Dr Harindu Wijesinghe and orthopaedic surgeon in Australia Dr David Young.

This is the second postponement Malinga has undergone to test the fitness of his knee.

He was originally due to undergo a test on December 23.

Malinga is struggling to be fit from a bone related injury to his left knee which he sustained during the ODI series against West Indies in October-November.

Wijegunawardene stated that Malinga will undergo the fitness test over three days - from December 28-30 and the test will be conducted by the local physios along with coaches of the Sri Lanka Cricket fast bowling academy.

"We want to make absolutely sure that Malinga is fully fit before he is allowed to compete. We are hoping that he will be available at least for the last two ODIs in the series," said Wijegunawardene.

"We have three important T20 tournaments coming up and we want Malinga to be fit for them," he said.

Following the tour of New Zealand, Sri Lanka have a bilateral T20 series in India followed by the Asia Cup (which will also feature T20 matches) in Bangladesh and the ICC World T20 in India.

If worst comes to the worst Malinga in all probability may miss the ODI series and be ready to lead Sri Lanka in the two T20 internationals against New Zealand at the tailend of the tour on January 7 and January 10 at Mount Manganui and Auckland respectively.
