Sri Lanka thrashes India 102/10 in Asian Youth Netball opener


Sri Lanka that is participating at the Asian Youth Netball Championship in Hong Kong made a fine start by thrashing a strong Indian team 102/10 yesterday.

Twelve nations are battling it out for the championship which began yesterday and will conclude on December 20 to qualify for the World Youth Netball Cup which is to be held in Botswana in 2017.

Sri Lanka has the services of experienced Gayani Dissanayaka as captain. She is also the vice captain of the national team. Sri Lanka also comprises national squad members Thisala Algama (vice captain) and Gayanjali Amarawansa who represented the country at the netball World Cup held in Sydney early this year.

Tough competition is expected among the nations as there is only one slot to be filled in the 2017 World Youth Netball Cup. Among the top favourites for the crown are Singapore, Malaysia and host Hong Kong who pose a great threat to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan squad: Gayani Dissanayaka (captain), Thisala Algama (vice captain), Gayanjali Amarawansa, Dulangi Wannithilaka, Ruwani Yatigammana, Bashini Yoshitha, Dilshani Kabral, Jayathri Upendra Abeysingha, Nadee Madushika Fernando, Sachini Hirunika, Hashini Eranga Perera and Senani Palika, Risuri Wijesundara (stand by), Sanduni Hasinika Welikala (stand by) and Mandira Charuni (stand by).
