Slain journalists' families should be compensated: PM

The new government ended a period which brought death to 44 media personnel, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in Parliament on Saturday. He also said the family members of media personal who lost their lives

should be given compensation. The Prime Minister made these observations joining the Committee Stage debate of the budget under the financial heads of the Mass Media and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.

"Media personnel should be provided training opportunities. They are demanding training. We can increase opportunities in universities," the Premier said. "We can make arrangements for them to obtain overseas training or else they could get disappointed."

The Prime Minister said as promised parliamentary proceedings are open to all.

He added that each Party should have research centres in the Parliament complex.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said there should be a Parliamentary Services Board for the members.

He also added that if a Parliamentary system is to be introduced, the members should be provided all facilities.
