Ranatunga insists ICC's recommendation for SLC candidates

Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has requested Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera to seek International Cricket Council's (ICC) recommendation for candidates who are seeking office at the upcoming Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) election.

In a communique released yesterday, the former World Cup winning skipper says that the ICC will be able to decide whether the candidates are suitable for the respective positions they contesting.

"The law should be implemented. There are laws in our country. ICC also has rules and regulations. Do not act beside them. This is not what we expect after we formed the new government," said Ranatunga.

"According to the Sports Law, anyone who has links directly or indirectly with gambling or importing of sports goods cannot contest for positions at the ICC. So if anyone is looking to become the chairman of SLC and not looking for a position at the ICC, I think that person is doing a wrong thing. When it comes to that problem, Thilanga Sumathipala has the biggest disadvantage," the media release quoted Ranatunga as saying during a television interview.

"So many people requested me to come forward as a candidate. When I looked at the law, I did not have two years experience as a member of the executive committee. I could have asked Sports Minister for permission to contest, but it means that I am not qualified. It is not fair if I did such a thing," Minister Ranatunga added.
