A superb try by Army skipper and hooker Asoka Jayalal three minutes before the final whistle helped the soldiers to pull off a sensational 18 points (a goal, a try and two penalties) to 17 (a goal and two tries) win over last year's runners-up Navy Sports Club in their Dialog Rugby League 'A' Division encounter played at Welisara yesterday.

The Sailors had an opportunity to draw first blood through a 30 metre penalty by Thilina Weerasinghe but it was not successful.

The soldiers opened their account when their full back Gayan Salinda booted a 40 metre penalty in the eighth minute.

Several minutes later Army winger Madushan Chandrasekara scored the first try for the visitors with Salinda adding the extra points to make it 10-0. The home team again missed a golden opportunity of scoring when their outside half Dev Anand missed a 40 metre penalty.

In the 37th minute of the first half flanker Yoshitha Rajapaksa scored the first try for Navy which went unconverted.

A few minutes before lemons full back Salinda fired across another penalty to give the soldiers a comfortable 13-5 lead over the sailors at half time.

The second half saw Navy powering their way to snatch the lead from Army when scrum half Suranga Pushpakumara crashed through for a near the post try. Fullback Weerasinghe was successful with the conversion to make it 13-12.

Off a fabulous three quarter move Navy winger Dinusha Chathuranga darted down the right flank for a superb try. Fullback Weerasinghe missed the difficult conversion and the sailors increased their lead to 17-13.

A few minutes before the final whistle came Jayalal's glorious try for Army to the jubilation of their supporters.
