Sri Lankan ace sprinter Yupun Abeykoon once again stole the limelight when he won 100m second place clocking 10.01 seconds at Meeting International Citta” Di Savona in Italy on Wednesday.
Reece Prescod of Great Britain was placed first in this race clocking 9.94 seconds.
The 28-year-old Abeykoon who ran his first meet of 2023 started his heat finishing second place with 10.04 seconds and reached the final with more confidence. However, the finish of the final race clearly showed Yupun ended the race hampered by a leg injury.
Abeykoon is the only South Asian sprinter who ran under 10 seconds to set up the South Asian 100m record.
Yupun Abeykoon already announced his unavailability for the next Asian Championships in Bangkok and confirmed to take part in Asian Games in China next September.
The athlete who hails from Pannala joined Sri Lanka Army and is now based in Italy for further training, he will focus on the next Olympics in France in 2024.
