The Criminal Investigation Department, which conducted an investigation into a brutal attack by a group of second year students on a group of freshers of the Sabaragamuwa University who stood up against ragging, has arrested four students who had been involved in the attack.
Hashan Sithija Rupasinghe (25), a resident of Wathugedara Ambalangoda, Kasun Buddhika (25), a resident of Welimada Udukinda, Shakila Alwis (23), a resident of Willorawatte, Moratuwa,
and Ravindu De Silva (24), a resident of Nedimala, Dehiwala, have been arrested.
The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office stated that these students were released on bail after being produced at the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (29).
The Police Media Spokesman’s Office also mentioned that these students were arrested for being members of an illegal assembly and trespassing into the Sabaragamuwa University hostel and assaulting and injuring new students by ragging them.The attack had taken place on February 15. Nine students studying in the first year of the Management Faculty were injured in this attack and admitted to the Balangoda Hospital.
The attack was carried out by a group of second year students who broke into the hostel where first year students of the Faculty of Management were staying, at around 10.00 pm.
The injured students stated that they were beaten with sticks and kicked and hit by hand.
This attack has been caused by the fact that these freshers did not obey rules imposed by the second-year students as a form of harassment to the freshmen, and had not cut their hair
short and rejected being ragged and harassed.
