D. S Senanayake College skipper Manura Pieris scored a fine knock of 98 in 104 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes while Mahanama spinner Inuka Karannagoda had fine figures of 5 for 62 which were highlights of the 17th Battle of the Golds big match which began at P. Sara Oval yesterday.
DS's batted first and made 203 while Mahanama made a bold reply scoring 120 for 3 wickets at close of the first day yesterday. DS's skipper Manura Pieris played the anchor role but unfortunately he was out two runs away from a well-deserved century when Viranga Yeshan took a catch to dismiss Pieris off the bowling of Rashmika Perera who finished the day taking 2 for 38 in his ten-over spell. DS's were 130 for six wickets at one stage but skipper Manura Pieris repaired the innings to pass the 200 mark. Inuka Karannagoda was the pick of the bowlers with a five-wicket haul.
Mahanama made a bold reply. Opener Kavindu Amaneth scored an unbeaten 74 in 83 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes while experienced Anjala Bandara remained on 21 in 53 balls with a four. The paceman Adeesha Bandaranayake took all three wickets for DS's.
Anjala Bandara the wicket keeper batter who is at the wicket is heading for his milestone of thousand runs today having scored more than 925 runs.
