Rs. 800 Mn still not disbursed to farmers’ accounts

Officials have not corrected actual account numbers

Agricultural Commissioner General H.M.L.A. Abeyratne said that the account numbers of 8 percent of accounts of paddy farmers has not been corrected for them to credit funds to the value of Rs.800 million provided by the Asian Development Bank.

Also, it has been revealed that the Agricultural Service Officers who are in charge of some of the farmers’ constituencies have not yet sent the farmers’ account numbers.

He also emphasized that 38 percent of the accounts sent to the Agricultural Development Department have been confirmed to be incorrect , and a staff of 20 people from the Department has been deployed on the instructions of the Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to correct them.

The Commissioner General pointed out that the Department has decided to take strict disciplinary action against the Regional Agricultural Service Officers who had given wrong farmer account numbers deliberately and did not provide the necessary information and it appears that this is a deliberate act of sabotage by a group of officers.

“Since it appears that these officials have worked to disrupt this arrangement that provides relief to the farmers, strict disciplinary action will be taken against them, the Commissioner General said

Minister Amaraweera said that he has received information that there is a group of officials who support two opposition parties behind this crisis.

“If government employees engage in politics, they can leave the public service and join politics”, he said.

The Minister has also instructed the Commissioner General that strict disciplinary action should be taken against those officials who have been working to tarnish the reputation of the Department
