The 14 students who were arrested and remanded in connection with the incident of assaulting the former Vice-Chancellor, Senior Professor Athula Senaratne of the Peradeniya University
and his family members and causing damage to his official residence, were ordered to be released by the Kandy Magistrate’s Court yesterday on Rs.15,000 cash and surety bail of Rs.500,000 each.
The courts imposed several other conditions on the students as well and warned them that if they are violated, bail will be cancelled. The magistrate informed the students that they should not directly or indirectly influence the witnesses who have given evidence in this case and those who are going give evidence in the future. The case is scheduled to be called again on March 15.
