Two killed over land dispute in Ambalantota

A husband and wife were killed on Saturday after a clash between two groups of relatives regarding the ownership of a 40 perch land in Ambalantota. The deceased have been identified as residents of Ambalantota, Ridiyagama, W.A.Sunil (65) and H.M. Kusumalatha (62).

Police said that the crime was committed by the husband of the murdered person's sister and he has been arrested.

The suspect, N.D. Premasiri (66), is a resident of Beligalagoda, Ambalantota. Police said that there had been a long standing dispute regarding the ownership of a land adjoining the house of the murdered couple. A senior police officer said that the two parties have lodged several complaints in this regard on several occasions. A fresh dispute had broken out between the relatives over the land on Saturday, which led to a fight in which the suspect had allegedly attacked the couple with a sharp weapon.
