Sayumi Sandamali the champion athlete from Nattandiya

Fifteen year old up and coming athlete, the schools’ John Tarbet representative, under 12 and 14 Champion Sayumi Sandamini Wickramasinghe has brought honour and immense glory to her alma mater Dhammissara National School Nattandiya in the field of athletics.

Sayumi who hails from Napiriththakadawara Welipennagahamulla was born on May 20 2007 and admitted to her present school in 2013. As she showed keen interest on athletics from her tender age, her Parents Mahesh Rukman and Sitha Lakshmi made arrangements to hand over their daughter to School Athletic Coach Jude Chinthaka. when she was in grade two and her first attempt was at the Educational Divisional Meet and she came first in 50 metres, second in 30 metres and second in 4x50 relay event. In the following year too at the Divisional Meets in 2015 and 2016 she became runner up.

Then in 2017 as an under ten competitor she swept the board at the Divisional Meet and was adjudged the champion athlete. At the school meet she won the 100 metres second in 75 meters and came second in High Jump and Long Jump. Once again in 2017 she was adjudged the champion athlete in the Divisional Meet. She came first in High Jump in 2018 school meet and second in 100 metres. Then in the Nattandiya Educational Zonal Meet she came third in High Jump and Long Jump and at the 2018 school athletic meet she was the under 12 champion by winning high jump and long jump. In the 2019 school meet too she was the athletic champion.

At the 2019 Nattandiya National Youth Open Sports Festival Meet she came second in high jump and third in 4x100 metres and 4x600 metres relay events then in the North Western Open Meet they came first in 4x100 metres and taking part in the Puttalam District two kilometres Marathon she came first. In 2021 Divisional Youth Meet they came first in 4x400 and second in 4x100 meters relay and at the National Youth Sports Open Festival Meet she came third in 400 and 800 metres and won 4x400 and third in 4x100 and at the Puttalam District DRO secretariat open meet she came third in 800 and 400 and 4x400 first and at the 2022 Puttalam District Open Meet they came first in 4x100 metres and 4x400 metres relays and in the Chilaw Zonal Open Meet she came second in 800 and won 4x100 metres and 4x400 metres and finally at the John Tarbet Meet held in Biyagama in 2022 competing in the under 16 age group she took part in the 800 metres and in 4x100 metres and 4x400 metres they could not come up to expectations and her other members of the relay team were Subashini Madushika, Thanura Reshini and Himasha Vidumini.
