Electricity, fuel services declared essential services

All services connected to the supply of electricity and fuel have been once again proclaimed as essential services by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Gazette Extraordinary, published on Saturday under the Essential Public Services Act of 1979, stated that the services provided by any Public Corporation or Government Department or Local Authority or Co-operative Society, connected to supply of electricity and the supply or distribution of petroleum products and fuel, are essential to the life of the community.

In addition, the same Gazette has declared “all service, work or labour of any description whatsoever, necessary or required to be done in connection with the maintenance and the reception, care feeding and treatment of patients in hospitals, nursing homes, dispensaries and other similar institutions,” as essential public services.

The Gazette was issued by Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake on the orders of the President.
