MP Kaviratne says 25% abused by partner

Twenty five percent of girls and women above the age of 15 are sexually abused by their intimate partner, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kaviratne stated in Parliament yesterday (1).

MP Kaviratne noted that 25% of women are subjected to physical or sexual violence by their partner or someone else, 18% are subjected to economic abuse and 21% are subjected to partner violence.

“Today, all women MPs are wearing orange to declare their commitment to end all violence against women for 16 days from today. Although it has been a year since I suffered from a similar experience in this House as a woman, I have not received justice in Parliament.” MP Kaviratne said.

“All forms of violence against women should be avoided. What is all forms of violence? Physical violence, mental violence, sexual violence and economic violence. Wearing this orange colour symbolize that we will refrain from all these forms of violence and that we are bound to formulate the necessary policies for that. A gender-sensitive budget has not been presented in this parliament.”

“The Ministry of Child and Women’s Affairs was given poor treatment. 25% of women are subjected to sexual violence. 18% suffer economic violence. 25% of girls and women over the age of 15 are sexually abused by their intimate partner. 25% are physically or sexually abused by their partner or someone else. 18% suffer economic abuse. 21% are subjected to partner violence. No money has been given in the budget to solve these problems. Three-fifth of the women who left their jobs have been assured that they will return to work if it is confirmed that sexual harassment does not occur. 52 of the country’s population are women. They are the ones who make governments. There is no safety center in this country for women who are abused by their husbands. When the husband fights with the police and leaves, the police send the woman back home. Finally, when a murder takes place, the police open their eyes.” the MP said.
