Control population of wild animals that are harmful– Ministry official

The control of the population of wild animals that are harmful to the crop cultivation is the only viable solution towards reducing the damage caused to the cultivation by them, an official from the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security said. According to him, the monkeys and peacocks cause bigger damage to the food crop cultivations than elephants in Sri Lanka.

Such a programme should be implemented by the authorities through the Department of Wildlife, he further said.

A research conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture has revealed that the value of the food crops damaged by the wild animals in the first half of 2022 is over Rs.30 billion.

Those animals had destroyed 144,989 metric tons of 28 food crop varieties, including paddy during this period. The crop that suffered the greatest damage in 2022 was coconut, the research further points out.
