Data Protection Authority to be established next year

State Minister of Technology Kanaka Herath says that the establishment of the Data Protection Authority will be done in 2023 to regulate the negative effects of digitization.

The purpose of establishing this data protection authority is to take necessary swift action to protect the privacy of the citizens from the adverse effects of digitization.

Herath said steps have also been taken to improve cyber security in 10 government agencies. 43 institutions have been identified that maintain 124 critical national information technology systems that affect the country’s national security, public welfare, economy and health. Necessary measures are being taken to protect these systems from cyber attacks.

The State Minister said that steps will be taken to improve cyber security of ten government institutions, including the Immigration Department, the Department of Registration of Persons, the Sri Lanka Customs, and the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Measures have also been taken to educate 10,000 government officials about cyber security.
