Inoka pilots SL women to victory

Inoka Ranaweera the experienced leg spinner had fine figures of 4 for 7 runs in just two overs as Sri Lanka women’s team recorded a thrilling three run win (D/L method) over defending champions Bangladesh in their Asia Cup T-20 cricket fixture played at Sylhet International cricket stadium yesterday.

Rain interrupted the game when Sri Lankan lasses were batting first at 83 for 5 wickets in 18.1 overs and Bangladesh had to get a rivised target of 41 runs in 7 overs.

Sri Lankan bowlers made good effort in this game while 36 year old former Skipper and leg spinner Inoka Ranaweera leading the way capturing her best figures of the T-20 format to put pressure on the opponents to seal the victory.

In fact Inoka Ranaweera had an excellent over at number 6 as she was capturing three wickets and one run out in this over conceding only three runs which was the deciding over of the game. Inoka Ranaweera was adjudged the Player of the Game for her excellent figures.

Earlier for Sri Lanka team Nilakshi de Silva top scored with an unbeaten 28 in 31 balls with two fours while after making a poor start by Sri Lankan top order. Opener Harshitha Samarawickrama the inform batter scored 18 in 31 balls with two fours while skipper Chamari Atapattu was once again not among the runs scoring only one run in 5 balls and her prized wicket was taken by Janahara Alam in the second over. Hasini Perera and Kavisha Dilhari also made 11 runs each while Rumana Ahmed took 2 for 14 for the Bangladesh team.

Sri Lankan lasses already have qualified for the semi finals and they will meet Pakistan today which is their last league round game before the semi finals.

Sri Lanka women’s team head coach Hashan Tillekaratne said the girls are in a good mood after entering the semi finals while their progress match by match is very good. He also said skipper Chamari Atapattu struggled as an opener so far in this tournament but she is the most experienced batter having played more franchise games and expected to return to form in the rest of the important games.

Meanwhile India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are first, second and third places so far in this tournament after playing five matches each with one match to play and all three have already entered the semi final while all three teams have eight points each.

However Bangladesh who lost to Thailand are laying in fifth place and Thailand are in fourth place. Both Bangladesh and Thailand are fighting to enter the semi final.

The match between India and Thailand was scheduled to be played yesterday while Bangladesh and UAE will meet today (11). The results of these two matches will decide the qualification of the fourth semi finalists either Thailand or Bangladesh.

Sri Lankan Inoka Ranaweera is the second highest wicket taker with 9 wickets so far in this tournament while Harshitha Samarawickrama also scoring 165 runs are in second place among the batters. Bangladesh bowler Rumana Ahamed (10 wickets) and Indian batter Jamimah Rodrigues (188 runs) (before India Vs Thailand game) are highest wicket taker and highest scorer respectively.
