State bound to ensure security of all University academics, staff, students - State Minister

The Defence State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon told Parliament that the security of the academic, non-academic staff and the undergraduates in the entire Sri Lankan university system is entrusted with the government.

The State Minister noted that the government is bound to ensure the security of all these groups.

Tennakoon made these observations in response to a question raised by the State Media Minister Shantha Bandara regarding the recent events that took place at the Peradeniya University.

Tennakoon made this observation in response to a question raised by State Minister Shantha Bandara regarding the events that took place at Peradeniya University.

State Minister Tennakoon further said that some student unions are carrying out acts of fascism, extremism, threats and thuggery in the university system.

Tennakoon also said that there may be different definitions of democracy, but in the absence of peace, freedom, democracy, rule of law and national security nothing is protected.

Tennakoon also said that first-year students in the state university system cannot wear a watch and female students must come in cheetah gowns due to ragging. He also said that there are other unspeakable things happening and that the ragging in the university system has reached a serious point.

“Almost all national newspapers have reported on this today. This dean has made a complaint about this. This is a serious situation. The opposition leader is demanding real democracy and freedom. But the student unions are carrying fascism, extremism, threats and thuggery inside the universities. First year university students are not allowed to wear watches. If a student comes with a watch on hand, it will be tied to his leg. Female students are not allowed to wear jeans. They can’t wear an earring or a necklace. More unspeakable things are also taking place,” he noted.
