House raises concerns over conduct of Law College Entrance Exam in English

The House raised concerns yesterday (03) over the decision to conduct the entrance examination to the Law College only in English language. Both the Government and the Opposition MPs pointed out that it is in violation of Fundamental Rights and that it limits rural students from gaining an opportunity to enter the Law College.

MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara pointed out that English is a “link language” and the two official languages in Sri Lanka are Tamil and Sinhala.

Thus, he argued that the said decision is in violation of the Constitution.Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that the Council of Legal Studies would look into the matter.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha noted that there were provisions in the Constitution for any higher education institute to conduct examinations in any language except for official languages.
