Real suspect in girl’s murder arrested after 13 years

Remanded man languishes in prison for want of money

The Eheliyagoda Police arrested a suspect who raped and killed a 15-year-old girl, 13 years after the murder.

The girl had been killed while she was walking home from school. She had been attacked with a sharp weapon and she had been raped after that. Police said the arrested suspect is a 39-year-old man who works in gem mines and is a father of two children. He was 26 years at the time of the crime. The police say the victim was Kushani Piyumi Madhavika Jayasinghe was a resident of Ellawala Pitakanda in Kosgahamukalana area of Eheliyagoda. This incident happened on May 23, 2009.

Now it has been revealed that another man had been in jail for 13 years for a crime he did not commit as he had no money to pay for legal redress. He had been remanded after being produced in court in connection with the murder and rape of this girl, the police at that time had arrested this young man who looks after cows.

Although he was later granted bail, he is still in remand prison for 13 years as no one had come forward to fulfill his bail conditions. The police say that after finding the girl’s body the day after her murder, during the examination of her body, a hair stuck to her body and sperm had been found. After they had been referred to an investigation the hair sample had been determined as compatible with the person who was looking after the cows. The police said the body of the girl was found where the person who was looking after cows brought the animals to feed.
