“There is a shortage of essential life-saving drugs and surgical equipment in many hospitals, including the Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Vice President of the All Ceylon Medical Officers’ Association (ACMOA) Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera disclosed .
He made the above disclosure at a press briefing held in Galle.
In Karapitiya Hospital as well as in other hospitals, there is a shortage of life-saving drugs as well as drugs needed to treat common ailments. There is also a shortage of medical equipment. The wards of the hospital are not regularly getting medicine. There is a shortage of medicines used for anaesthesia in the Karapitiya Hospital, as well as medicines used in the treatment of head injuries. There is a shortage of drugs used in haemodialysis at Karapitiya Hospital. Medicines for cancer patients and medicines for blood growth are also in short supply,” he further said.
There is an acute shortage of paracetamol tablets and medicines for vomiting as well as medicines for stomach inflammation. It has become impossible to find the equipment used in operating theatres and Intensive Care Units.
When the medicine ran out of stock in the hospital, the medicine was obtained from outside pharmacies. But now even the pharmacies are running out of those medicines.
Patients cannot bear the high cost of medicines. The health sector is under severe crisis. The government should immediately intervene in this matter, Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera urged.
