Three-hour power cut from today

The power cut will be extended to 03 hours from Tuesday (16) due to a breakdown repair of the Norochcholai Lakvijaya coal power plant, a Ceylon Electricity Board issuing press release said yesterday (15).

The power cut was earlier limited to 01 hour and 20 minutes.

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved power cuts of three hours from August 16-19, yesterday. Accordingly, the groups from A to L and from P to W will experience 1 hour and 40 minute power cut during daytime and 1 hour and 20 minute power cut during night. The groups M,N,O,X,Y and Z will experience a three-hour cut from 5.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. while the group CC ‘s power cut will be limited to 2 hours and 30 minutes from 6.00 a.m. to 8.30 a.m.

Meanwhile, CEB Acting General Manager Engineer D.C.R.Abeysekara said, “The first generator (Unit 01) with a capacity of 300 megawatts at the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai has been disabled due to a sudden technical fault. It is expected to take approximately two weeks to restore this generator.” “The Second (Unit 02) Generator of the Lakvijaya Power Plant is undergoing major overhaul these days, so its total capacity of 300 megawatts has also been lost to the national system. Therefore, the national grid has lost 600 Megawatts,” he further said.

“Due to this situation, the public is kindly informed that there will be a power cut for a period of 03 hours from Tuesday (16),the CEB said.
