Two who stole slain MP’s jewellery remanded

The Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered to remand two suspects, who had allegedly stolen jewellery worn by slain MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala during the unrest in Nittambuwa on May 9.

The suspects were remanded till August 22. They are residents of Nittambuwa.

Polonnaruwa District MP Athukorala and his security officer, Police Sergeant Ahangama Vithanage Jayantha Gunawardena, were killed in Nittambuwa on May 9.

The gold jewellery, which the MP was wearing, had been stolen after he was killed.

The two suspects were arrested based on the investigations of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the CCTV footage and information revealed through interrogation of other suspects remanded in connection with the incident.The suspects had pawned the gold jewellery.

With these two suspects, a total of 37 suspects are in remand custody in connection with the incident.
