Elephant found dead with gunshot injuries

The carcass of a wild elephant that had been shot was found near the bank of the Pallavi tank close to the Unnichchai irrigational tank along the Batticaloa-Badulla highway on Saturday (16), Ayethiyamalai Police said.

Wildlife Department officers who estimate its age to be around 20 years have taken charge of the carcass.

Upto July this year, 13 deaths of wild elephants due to electrocution and poisoning have been reported.

The Ayethiyamalai Police are investigating.
