Suspect remanded for berating judge

Sapugaskanda Police arrested a private bus driver who scolded the Embilipitiya High Court Judge using abusive language, in the Batalanda area, impeding the latter’s vehicle.

Mahara Magistrate Janitha Perera ordered the suspect to be remanded until June 24 and ordered him to be produced for an identification parade.

According to the police, while Embilipitiya High Court Judge Buddhika Sri Ragala had been on his way to duty on June 15 with his security officer, a bus driver had interrupted his journey in the Batalanda area in Sapugaskanda and acted in an unruly manner even using abusive language.

The Judge then made a complaint to the Embilipitiya Police and the Sapugaskanda Police and the suspect was arrested on June 17.

The defence counsel pleaded that bail be granted to his client as he had acted in such a manner without the knowledge that the plaintiff was a judge. However attorneys-at-law Berny Alwis, Sudarshana Wickramaratne and Prasanna Wimalaratne appearing for the prosecution, objected to the plea stating that the crime was so severe that he should not receive bail.
