Public Security Ministry Secretary resigns

Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Major General Jagath Alwis (Rtd) handed over his resignation yesterday stepping down from his post.

He had handed over his letter of resignation to the President’s Secretary Gamini Senarath yesterday. Alwis had cited personal reasons for stepping down from his post as Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security.

Meanwhile, he was summoned to the CID yesterday to record a statement regarding allegations levelled against him over the May 9 violence.

In Parliament last week it was revealed by a Minister that the IGP and Major General Jagath Alwis should be held responsible for the May 9 violence as they had prevented the orders issued by the President from being implemented.

Accordingly, Jagath Alwis had reported to the CID at around 11.30 a.m.

So far, the CID has recorded statements from MPs Namal Rajapaksa, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Rohitha Abeygunawardana, C.B.Ratnayaka, Indika Anurudda and Sanjeewa Edirimanna.
