Angelo Mathews reaches 6500 Test runs

Angelo Mathews passed the 6500-run mark in Test cricket on Tuesday during Sri Lanka’s first Test against Bangladesh in Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.

He became only the fourth player in Sri Lanka Test cricket history to reach the landmark, after Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Angelo Mathews got to the 6500-run mark while playing in his 95th Test and his 171st innings for his country. The batting all-rounder has an average of 44.80 in Test cricket; with 12 centuries and 37 fifties to his name, as well as a top score of 200 not out against Zimbabwe.

His double hundred came in the dominant win over Zimbabwe in January 2020. Mathews also has 5830 runs to his name in ODI cricket, and is no doubt one of Sri Lanka’s modern-day greats.

The 34-year-old began his Test career in 2009, but is showing no signs of stopping at the moment. He has also passed batting legend Aravinda de Silva (6361 runs) to emerge fourth in Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorers list.

Mathews has scored 6631 runs and while third-placed Sanath Jayasuriya will also be in Mathews’ sights, with 6973 Test runs to his name in 110 Test matches.

Despite crossing the historic 6500-run mark, Angelo Mathews converted his good start against Bangladesh into a big score where he was dismissed the last man on 199 as Sri Lanka scored 397 all out on day two against Bangladesh in the first Test.
