Heavy rains affect 8,330 in Kalutara, Ratnapura

About 8,330 people belonging to nearly 2,100 families in the Kalutara and Ratnapura Districts were affected due to heavy rains, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Situation Report stated.

The DMC said 232 houses and 17 business establishments were partially damaged in those districts.

About 7,934 people belonging to 1,991 families in the Ratnapuara District were affected due to floods, landslide risk, high wind, heavy rains, and lightning from May 13-16. Another 397 people belonging to 108 families were affected due to high wind, heavy rains and lightning in the Kalutara District from May 13-15. DMC Media Spokesman Pradeep Kodippili said that the DMC district coordination centres and the Tri-Forces are on alert and ready to provide assistance in any emergency situation.

Water levels of the Kalu, Gin and Nilwala rivers, which were rising to flood level over the past few days due to heavy rains, were falling as at yesterday. The Meteorology Department said that the South-west monsoon condition is gradually establishing over the island.

“Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern provinces. Heavy showers, about 100 mm, can occur at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
