National Sports Council resigns

National Sports Council (NSC) members headed by former National Skipper Mahela Jayawardene have resigned and it’s confirmed by Sports Director General Amal Edirisooriya yesterday.

The Sports Director General himself is also a member of the 14 member National Sports Council appointed by the former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa in August 2020 to advise the Sports Minister on sports policy matters. The DG Sports further added that all committee members have tendered their resignation after the decision taken on April 4.

The new Sports Minister has a chance to appoint a new committee in the future added Sports Director General. The head of the Committee Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara both are in India engaging IPL as coaches and also joined the committee discussion on zoom technology before this committee decision. Meanwhile, it is also learnt that the National Sports Council appointed Cricket Technical Advisory Committee, which includes former skippers Kumar Sangakkara and Aravinda de Silva, and Muttiah Muralitharan too, will become defunct with the resignations. Former Skipper Roshan Mahanama, also a member of this committee, resigned in early January (21) due to personal reasons.
