Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Jehan Mubarak, (41), has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team with immediate effect.

On a recommendation made by the Cricket Technical Committee, which later was approved by the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Mubarak will take over this post immediately, replacing his own club mate Avishka Gunawardene.

Avishka’s tenure ended after the recently concluded Under-19 World Cup held in the Caribbean, where the Lankan team lost very badly to Afghanistan in their qualifying game. An old Royalist, Mubarak later played for SSC and worked as the Under-19 head coach of his school, performing a decent job. Jehan has represented Sri Lanka in 13 Tests, 40 ODIs and 16 T20Is. He is considered as one of best coaches in the country in modern day cricket. Apart from coaching, he performed as a commentator in the recently played series in the country.

Born in 1981 in Washington DC, Mubarak is also a prolific swimmer, who represented the school water polo team. (AN)
