We couldn’t execute our plans well, says skipper Karunaratne

“We couldn’t execute our plans well and got our calculation wrong said Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne after the first Test which lost by innings and 222 runs over India at Mohali yesterday.

Karunaratne the experienced opener who himself was unable to make long innings in this game said sometimes we were too defensive, sometimes we were too attacking. Sometimes we just needed to take singles and rotate the strike and get to the other side.

That’s how we can play big innings but it wasn’t executed well. I think the batsmen need to put their hands up and bat longer. We thought the wicket was going to be up and down on day three. That’s why we played with three seamers that didn’t work out as we planned, said Karunaratne.

Karunaratne further said I think we did well in the first two sessions of the game on the first day but once the ball got older we couldn’t do well. Those are the areas we need to work on and expect to do better in the next game.

Sri Lanka also suffered a big blow as a seamer Lahiru Kumara was off the field after bowling 10 overs due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Man of the Match Ravindra Jadeja. said “This is my lucky ground. Whenever I come here Mohali, I always get positive vibes. I was looking to build a partnership with the wicket. To be honest I don’t know about stats but I am happy to do well with bat and ball. When you perform like this, you feel very confident. I haven’t done anything differently with my batting said Jadeja who scored an unbeaten 175 and took a match bag of nine wickets.

The winning Indian captain Rohit Sharma said ‘It was a good start to my captaincy career. I never thought it was going to be that kind of a Test that gets over in three days. It was a good batting wicket with help for spinners and seamers. Credit to our bowlers who bowled in tandem and applied pressure.
