Avishka’s surgery successful says, Prof. Arjuna de Silva

Sri Lanka’s top order right-hander Avishka Fernando, who got injured during a practice session in Australia, underwent surgery last Tuesday (22). Sri Lanka Cricket Medical Committee Chairman Prof. Arjuna de Silva said Avishka had a knee injury and his surgery which was done by renowned Australian Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. David Young is successful and now he is recovering. Dr. Young has performed very successful surgeries for several earlier Sri Lankan top cricketers such as Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath.

Prof. Arjuna de Silva further said, “after recovering from the surgery, Avishka Fernando will have to undergo rehabilitation of his right leg for three weeks and nearly 3-6 months he is set to miss cricket. Fernando is a very important player for the Sri Lanka team as a hard hitter, especially for the forthcoming T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be worked off from October 16th to November 13th in Australia.”

Prof. Arjuna de Silva also pointed out players should stay during their full recovery period and presently cricketers have a busy schedule and are prone to injuries.

The 23-year-old Fernando was able to play the first two T-20 matches of the last Australian series and failed to make a significant impact with the bat scoring 6 and 5. The hard-hitting stroke maker having scored 336 runs at an average of just 12.00 in T-20s.

He played 26 ODI’s scoring 964 runs with an average of 37.07 including three centuries. Fernando made outstanding performances at the last LPL tournament and was adjudged the Man of the Final as well as the Player of the Tournament.
