Used LP Gas tanks can be returned: CAA

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) informed the Court of Appeal yesterday that there is a possibility of returning the half-used and suspicious domestic LP Gas cylinders and the public will be made aware regarding this initiative through the electronic media today (27).

Senior State Counsel Manohara Jayasinghe appearing for the CAA told the Court of Appeal that printed notices in Sinhala, Tamil and English in this regard had been published in the national newspapers yesterday.

This was stated by the Senior State Counsel when the petitioner, public interest activist Nagananda Kodithuwakku complained that the CAA and the LP Gas companies had not acted in accordance with the previous order of the Court to take back the LP Gas cylinders.

Petitioner Kodithuwakku made this complaint when the writ petition filed by him seeking legal action under Criminal Law against the LP Gas companies and those responsible for importing and distributing unsafe domestic LP Gas cylinders, was taken up before the Court yesterday.

The petition was taken up before the Court of Appeal Bench comprising Justices Ruwan Fernando and Sampath Wijeratne.

The petition will be taken up again on February 8.

Laugfs Holdings Ltd., Litro Gas Co., CAA Chairman D.M.S. Dissanayake, Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) Director General Siddhika Senaratne, Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, the Chief Government Assessor and ten others were named as the respondents.
