Court orders release of 56 Indian fishers

India commends move :

The Point Pedro Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered the release of 56 Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy for allegedly poaching in Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.

These fishermen had been intercepted by the Sri Lanka Navy Fast Attack Craft attached to the Northern Naval Command South East of Delft Island in December.

The fishermen have been sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for five years after they pleaded guilty to crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

The Magistrate has also ordered the authorities to make arrangements to send them back to India.

Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Colombo in a tweet welcomed the release of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Courts.“Happy to learn that a Court has ordered the release of 56#Indian fishermen,” the Indian High Commission in Colombo tweeted.

Meanwhile Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S.Jaishankar in tweet commended the efforts of Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Gopal Baglay and the High Commission officials to secure the fishermen’s release. “Commend the work of High Commissioner Gopal Baglay and his team in securing the release,” he tweeted.
