CPC to release fuel for power generation

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will provide 1500 metric tonnes of diesel per day to maintain power plants which have been shut down by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Chairman Sumith Wijesinghe said further action will be taken after a discussion to be held on Tuesday (18).

The CPC had previously stated that it will no longer be able to supply fuel to the CEB on a loan basis. The Chairman said that based on the request of the CEB and the prevailing situation this decision was made.

The CEB said recently that if fuel is not received for operating power plants, power cuts will have to imposed further in the upcoming period.

The Board said that the daily power supply had to be cut due to shortage of furance oil and diesel for power plants, failure of a generator at the Norochcholai thermal power plant and declining water levels associated with hydro power plants.
