YWMA to launch educational programmes for boys

The Young Women’s Muslim Association (YWMA) will launch a number of educational programmes for 2022 to encourage boys’ education in society.

Desamanya Fawaza Thaha who was unanimously re-elected as the President of the Young Women’s Muslim Association, YWMA, told the Daily News on Monday that the shift from girls’ education to Boys is due to the fact there were more school-leavers among boys than the girls.

“The educated girls cannot find good matches when it comes to marriage because of this social imbalance,” she said, pointing out that the general body has decided to form a comprehensive programme to implement the decision of the general body.

Thaha was unanimously re-elected for the third consecutive year at its 35th Annual General Meeting of the YWMA held at the Ramada Hotel in Colombo on January 8.

Besides the members, special guests included the president of the All-Ceylon YMMA Conference, Saheed M. Rismi and its secretary-general Shabir Sawad. The YWMA has been rendering yeoman services for the uplift of Muslim women in all parts of the island. The organisation which functions as a sister body of the All-Ceylon YMMA Conference was engaged in ameliorating the living conditions of Muslim women. Supplying potable water, helping self-help projects and attending to the needs of the distressed women are some of their activities.

The following were elected office-bearers for the ensuing year: Patron - Halida Shahabdeen, Vice Patron - Marliya Sideek, President- Fawaza Thaha, Immediate Past President- Jennath Ismail, Vice President- Maimuna Yonus, Secretary-Soraiya Rizvi, Asst Secretary-Noorul Ayn Hussain, Treasurer-Kaneez Malik and Asst. Treasurer-Faiza Hameed.
