Jeewan Mendis retires from int’l cricket

Sri Lankan former all-rounder Jeewan Mendis has announced his retirement from international cricket.on Monday.

The 38-year right arm leg spinner and left hand batter has played 58 ODI’s scoring 636 runs taking 28 wickets in 22 T-20’s in his International career. He also got chance to play two World Cups in 2015 and 2019. His ODI debut against Zimbabawe in 2010 while ended with 2019 World Cup game against South Africa at Chester le Street in England in June 28 in 2019 .

The former S. Thomas Mt Lavinia all rounder really performed well during his school career to enter the club level. The talent was clear since his school days, where he won several awards, including the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 2001 and Man of the Series award in the Under-17 Asia Cup during the same year. He continued to impress in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he picked up a record 7 for 19 against Zimbabwe.

He played for Sinhalese Sports Club in Sri Lanka’s domestic circuit and though, he was consistent with the bat, he rarely got a chance to show his all-round skills. The switch to Tamil Union in 2008 turned out to be a turning point for him and until he retired from international cricket he represented Tamil Union and also one time captained the club.

In the 2018-19 Premier League tournament, he picked up a nine-wicket-haul in an innings, which turned out to be the best bowling figures of that season. Soon after, he made it to Sri Lanka’s 2019 50-over World Cup squad.

Jeewan Mendis took to twitter, saying “It was an incredible journey with Sri Lanka Cricket, which I was honored to be a part of since 2010. So many valuable lessons learnt and beautiful memories I cherish throughout this amazing journey. I wish to thank all my coaches and teammates. I am eternally grateful”.
