Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are expected to introduce new fitness benchmarks for all the men’s teams from January 2022.

The tougher fitness benchmarks will be for the 2-km run and the skin-fold test. All 60 contracted players have been informed by Sri Lanka Cricket Physical Performance unit that the first of the four fitness tests for 2022 will be conducted on January 7

The 2-km run which was introduced in early 2021 had a previous benchmark of 8 minutes and 35 seconds. However, the players will now have to complete the run within 8 minutes and 10 seconds. The other fitness parameter – the skin-fold test, which had a previous benchmark of level 80, has now been lowered to 70.

The fitness levels of the national cricketers improved massively over the last few months with the introduction of a fitness criteria to the performance-based contracts. Also, passing the aforementioned fitness tests were made mandatory by the selectors for any national, ‘A’ team or U19 tours.

The National selection committee headed by Promodya Wickramasinghe always highly recommend fitness benchmarks to apply for the selection policy. Besides the fitness test they will test players skills to see whether they are ready to play and with this set up players also arevery concerned to keep their fitness.

We don't like to give a chance with out passing the fitness test they should improve their fitness day by day. If any one can't keep their fitness for their required level how can we suggest his name for the team.

This policy is similar for young as well as experienced players and we wanted to select best team for National duty said chairman Promodya Wickramasinghe and that's why we consider fitness for any player.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka cricket team expected to play three ODI series against Zimbabwe which scheduled to commence in mid January and it will be most probably at Pallekele International cricket stadium.

However dates and venue have still not finalized.
