Hearing three cases against Minister Johnston postponed

Three corruption cases filed against Highways Minister and Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando and two others were postponed yesterday for January 28 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika C. Ragala.

When the matter was taken up before Court, Attorney-at-Law Niroshan Siriwardena appearing on behalf of the Minister informed Court that the Court of Appeal had issued an interim order preventing the Magistrate’s Court from hearing the cases till January 11, 2022.

The case is over allegedly causing an unlawful loss of Rs.40 million to the Government by employing 153 employees of the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) for election work during 2010 to 2014.

The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed these corruption cases against three accused under section 70 of the Bribery Act.

Accordingly, the case against Road and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando, former CWE (Lak Sathosa) Chairman Eraj Fernando and the former Minister’s Private Secretary Raj Mohideen Mohammad Sakeer were postponed for January 28.
