Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews is likely to be ruled out of the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2021 cricket tournament due to the thigh strain he sustained in the ongoing 2nd Test against the West Indies. Sri Lanka Cricket Medical Committe Head Professor Arjuna de Silva has confirmed Mathews will most probably be ruled out of the LPL tournament since this type of injury requires 4-6 week of rehabilitation.
Professor Arjuna de Silva further said Mathews has suffered a grade 2 hamstring tear. He has to be out from cricket for rehabilitation and it is more important for him to continue the game .
Mathews sustained the injury on the second day of the Test during the first innings of Sri Lanka and did not return to the field when the West Indies commenced their innings, even though he was set to bowl a few overs. However if necessary Mathews will bat in the Sri Lanka second innings said Professor Arjuna de Silva .
The 34 year old most experienced player of the Sri Lanka team already played 91 Tests with scoring 6308 runs had taken time off from cricket for several months due to personal reasons. He had returned to the field with the West Indies Series. He also expected to captain the Colombo Stars team at the second edition of the LPL which will commence on December 5'th. This is going to be a major blow for Colombo Stars team. If Mathews couldn't take part Dinesh Chandimal most probably will captain the Colombo Stars team .
