Jumbo attacks in Ampara District

A damaged coconut garden.

Wild elephants invade villages of the Ampara District more often now. They damage crops and assets and kill people as well.

A herd of elephants recently invaded Sinnappanankadu and Ithiyadi in the Alayadivembu Divisional Secretariat area and ruined coconut trees, plantains and crops. The elephants stay around a pond in the daytime and invade the village thereafter at night, they said.

Alayadivembu Divisional Secretary P. Pabakaran visited the areas and assessed the damage. He provided crackers to the farmers to chase away the elephants.

The Divisional Secretary also promised that he will instruct the Wildlife Officials to erect an electric fence.

Wildlife State Minister Wimalaweera Dissanayake said that villagers will be protected from the wild elephants by erecting an electric fence around the villages.
