Ratmalana-Jaffna flights to resume

Domestic flights between the Jaffna International Airport (IATA code JAF) and the Ratmalana International Airport (RML) will resume soon, Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said.

Accordingly, plans are afoot to recommence the flight operations next month. They have been suspended due to the pandemic from March 2020. Earlier, flights between Ratmalana and Jaffna were conducted twice a week. The Minister has instructed officials to seek the possibility of operating daily domestic flights between two destinations.

Meanwhile, the Minister has instructed officials to recommence direct flights between Jaffna and Chennai immediately,  following health guidelines. Special attention will also be paid to recommence the development of the Palaly (Jaffna) International Airport which was halted due to the pandemic.

The Jaffna Airport had been used by the Royal Air Force during World War II. After independence, it was used for flight connectivity with Indian destinations. After the civil war in the 1980s, such operations stopped. Since then, the airport has been used by the Sri Lanka Air Force and private domestic operators.
