Mill owners unreasonable - State Minister

The retail prices for rice announced by Rice Mill Owners are unreasonable, said Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

In a statement, State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said that if any faction attempts to exploit the Government’s decision to lift the controlled prices on rice, the Government and the Consumer Affairs Authority would step in again to protect the consumer.

Following the Government’s announcement of removal of price controls on rice, the Large-Scale Mill Owners’ Association announced revised retail prices yesterday. It announced that one kilogram of Nadu would be Rs.115, a kilo of Samba would be Rs.140 and one kilogram of Keeri Samba would be Rs.165. The mill owners have also decided to purchase paddy from farmers at following rates: Nadu at Rs. 62.50 per kilo, Samba at Rs. 70.00 per kilo and Keeri Samba at Rs. 80.00 per kilo.
