Hillwood College has produced top netball, tennis and hockey players

Hillwood Girls College, Kandy is a prestigious girl’s school which is over 125 years old and has done the best to promote all sports with the enthusiasm coming from the School Principal, rest of the academic staff and old girls. This school encourages students to take part in sport in an attempt to nurture a child who will be able to accept victory as well as defeat in good spirit.

The students have displayed their abilities in different sports bringing honour to the school. This school has games such as Netball, Tennis, Table-Tennis, Badminton, Chess, Hockey, Basketball, Swimming, and Athletics.

Tennis was perhaps the first game introduced to Hillwood. They have one of the best tennis courts. Netball was first introduced in 1921 and was the second school in the country to play netball. It is interesting to note that these games, were played for a number of years with the players in Kandyan Saree. In 1947 the Saree-clad Hillwood netball team became the Central Province champions.

The 2012 netball tournament for Central Province schools was held at Matale Bernard Aluwihare Stadium in end of May After winning their way through from district and zonal to the National Schools Provincial Tournaments, Hillwood Netball teams dominated the event at Matale.

Under - 15 team came to the semi-finals while the under - 17 and under - 19 teams went through to the finals. Hillwood Under - 17 team played against Kandy Girls’ High School and emerged champions. Under 19 team played the finals with Kandy Girls’ High School and was placed Runner-up.

Lawn Tennis has always been Hillwood’s most popular game. Hillwood is one of the girl’s schools which continue to play tennis in Kandy. Stool-ball was yet another of the games played by the Hillwoodians, and was a favourite game.

It is no longer played,but they are keen to bring back the sport. The founders of the school and all succeeding principals realized the importance of sports and gave due weightage to the physical development of the child.

They are also promote the game of Basketball in a big way. They have produced champions in Chess, they also give big support for hockey. In Badminton too they have done well. Swimming is also a popular sport, they have a top class pool in the school premises and students do well.

In Athletics, they have their inter school sports meet annually which is one of the most looked forward events and also have produced top athletes at provincial and national level.

Hillwood is one of the few schools that can boast of Tennis, Basketball,Netball, and Volleyball Courts and its greatest pride is the Swimming Pool built to International standards.

The college Netball Under17 and Under 19 teams are the 2013 Central Province champions with girls being selected to Sri LankaYouth team and to Sri Lanka School Under- 19 team to represent Sri Lanka in overseas tournaments. Members of the swimming, table tennis and basketball teams have made their mark in the every tournament that they have participated bringing glory to their alma-mater.

In 2013 Hillwood Girls College stunned the other schools with a thrilling performance to emerge Central Province under 17 netball champions in the tournament organized by the Education Ministry.

The girl who played a major role in this win was their tall and well built goal shooter Kaveena Rajapakse and height of over six feet towered above others and did well in collecting passes. She was well supported by goal attacker Nethmini Madanayake who was able to direct passes accurately and also the captian of the side Kavindya Gunatilake and defender Amandi Tissera did well.

Then in 2019 they won all three Netball titles. Under 16,Under 18 and Under 20 for the second successive year at the Central Province Netball championship organized by the Education Department.

Some of the players who did well were Tharindu Wijenayake(Best Player Under 18) Dinuli Munasinghe(Captain-Under 16) Jayathri Wijewardena(Captain Under 20) Rowindi Abeysinghe(Captain Under 18) Malifhi Dissanayake (Best Player Under 20) and Udari Guruge (Best Player Under 16).

Then in 2019 won three titles in netball at the under-16,18 and 20 championships at the Sports Festival organized by the Department of Education.

The founders of the school and all principals realized the importance of sports and gave due weight age to the physical development of the child.

The school has a blend of well qualified and experienced professional academic staff that impart knowledge as well as inculcates discipline and values to the future generations. There Old GirlsAssociation too give their maximum support for sports.

The institution has produced many Hillwoodians who had rendered devoted services to the nation.In fact, the first Lady Mayor in Asia Chandra Ranaraja who was a Hillwoodian. Late Minister Gamini Dissanayake and Late Maj. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa received their primary education at Hillwood. before joining Trinity College, Kandy.
