National champion Ranindu Liyanage and FIDE Master Sasith Piyumantha left for Bangladesh to participate in the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Grandmasters Chess Tournament, which began in Dhaka, Bangladesh yesterday.

This is the first time in two years that Sri Lankan players are participating in this over the board FIDE Chess World Cup 2021.

Ranindu was the first player to compete in the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021 in July and won the Bronze Medal at the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship, 2021.

Piyumantha is one of the strongest players in Sri Lanka, winning the Gold Medal at the Asian Under-16 Tournament in 2018 in Thailand.

The organisers have offered an attractive cash award of US $15,000 for the winners of this event.
