Rishad further remanded; father-in-law and wife granted bail

MP Rishad Bathiudeen has been remanded till October 1 by the Colombo Magistrate Court over the death of a 16-year-old domestic worker.

MP's father-in-law and wife have been released on bail.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya ordered MP Rishad Bathiudeen to be further remanded till October 1, over the case of a teenage domestic worker who died of burn injuries while serving at the Bathiudeen household.

The Additional Magistrate also ordered the MP’s wife and father-in-law who are in remand custody over the same incident to be released on bail.

They were released on two sureties of Rs.1,000,000 each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban on them.

On 15 July, the 16-year-old girl, who was serving as a domestic help at the Bathiudeen’s residence, succumbed to severe burn injuries, while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. She had been under medical care for 12 days since her admission to hospital on 3 July. The girl, who was residing in the Dayagama area, had been 15 years old when she was brought to the MP’s residence at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7, for domestic work last October.
