Sugar at Rs.130 a kilo from Lak Sathosa

Small Plantation Crops State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said sugar will be made available at Rs.130 per kilo through Lak Sathosa outlets soon despite the price hike in the market.

Wakkumbura told the Daily News that the government will supply sugar stocks to Lak Sathosa through Lanka Sugar company to be made available to consumers at Rs. 130 a kilo.

The State Minister said that the government succeeded in implementing a mechanism to provide sugar at Rs.115 per kilo during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season due to the sugar price hike in the open market.

“We were able to provide sugar at Rs.115 per kg for five months when there was a sugar price hike in the open market,” he said. Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said sugar prices have been raised in an ad-hoc manner and the issue will be brought to the notice of the President and the Finance Minister soon.
